EN : As early as the XVIth century, the viola da gamba was considered being the most perfect intrument, as close as can be to the human voice itself. Authors praise its soft and sweet sound, its dying bow lines, and its «ton d'Ambassadeur » ( voice of an Ambassador ). No doubt these are the qualities of an instrument for confidences and also of spiritual elevation.
The programm of this recital unites the greatest gamba players-composers.
Tobias Hume, first englishman to publish a complete recueil of pieces for the viola da gamba as a solo instrument, Mr de Ste Colombe, father of the french gamba school, Marin Marais being the most famous representative.
Carl Friedrich Abel at last, by whom the viola da gamba sings its Swans Song.
Philippe Pierlot signs two transcriptions for this recording , a work originally fro cello by Bach and one for harpsichord by Froberger.
